These kids are gearing up for their biggest gig yet: Meet Electric Heads

★ These kids are gearing up for their biggest gig yet: Meet Electric Heads ★

Electric Heads, Castlemaine’s youngest heavy band, is is on the come up.

When 14-year-old Fian Blundell first heard Metallica, Pantera and Black Sabbath on the car stereo, it blew his world wide open.

“They actually changed my life,” he says. “They changed my perception of music.”

This is understandable, considering he grew up with a dad who was into country and a mum who was into folk music.

“Metal was so different. I got hooked. I started learning guitar and learning how to sing metal properly. It’s just such an exciting thing to do.”

That spark has now grown into Electric Heads, a four-piece thrash-metal and rock outfit from Castlemaine, with all members aged between 12 and 14. Fian sings and plays rhythm guitar, Tyrone Brown is on drums, Cody Browne handles lead guitar, and Frankie Nixon anchors the sound on bass.

Despite being young as heck, Electric Heads have already played packed gigs in Melbourne, impressed local sludge-metal stalwarts DEAD, and last month took out first place at Castlemaine’s Battle of the Bands. This weekend, they’re on the bill at Chopped, the three-day festival of motors and music at Carisbrooke. It’s their biggest gig yet.

And they’re just getting started.

It all began at Chewton Primary School.

“Our band actually started when I was in grade six,” Tyrone says.

“Cody and Frankie were in Year Seven, and then they found Fian. It’s pretty good that we found a singer. Our first gig was Battle of the Bands in 2024. We got a special mention. Our next gig was with DEAD in Melbourne at the Last Chance Bar, which was awesome.”

Since then, DEAD have become mentors, helping the teenagers get shows and build confidence.

“Dead’s just such a good mentoring group for us,” says Fian. “They help us a lot with everything we do.”

Playing at the Theatre Royal in September, Electric Heads stormed through their set and came away with first place.

“It was awesome,” Fian says.

“The stage is elevated just right so you can see all these heads bouncing up and down. We were last on stage so everyone was really pumped. I reckon we definitely had an advantage because we were last.”

The band is loud, fast, and heavy. It’s got heart, too.

“I write about war stories, hell, depressing stuff too,” Fian says.

“It’s kind of like an outlet when I’m feeling down. Like talking to someone, but better, because you’re talking to everyone through a powerful song.”

Tyrone says his favourite song they’ve written is Judgment Day. “It’s very powerful. Very heavy.”

Word has spread quickly about Electric Heads. Ryan Ford, illustrator and promoter for Chopped, saw them play at the Red Hill Hotel during the Fringe Festival and invited them to play this weekend.

They won’t be on the main stage. Instead, they’ll be blasting riffs from the back of a moving truck. “Which is arguably cooler,” says Fian. “We get to drive around and play a bunch of music. It’s definitely our biggest gig by quite a long shot. There’ll be probably thousands of people.”

Later this year, Electric Heads will support Tropical Fuck Storm at the Theatre Royal. That offer came after TFS — who live around the corner from Tyrone — overheard the boys rehearsing.

Between school and rehearsals, Electric Heads are working towards recording their first tracks and sharing them online.

“We’re not just hoping for a miracle,” Fian says. “We’re really trying to work for it. Hopefully people keep liking our music and we just keep growing.”

For now, they’re living the dream. Four friends playing music, and pushing each other to get better.

“It’s just awesome to be this young doing this,” says Fian. “Ever since those six songs in the car with my brother, I was like, ‘Oh, I want to do that. Can I do that?’”

Yes. Yes, they can.

❀ Just a couple of goats smashing a bottle ❀

Cheers to Sput and Chip, who enjoyed their last-ever bottle this morning. Look at ‘em go! These local goats are all grown up, but still cute as.
